Patek Philippe Cubitus 7128 40mm Watch Review

Who says you can’t teach a new dog new tricks? Turns out, nobody said that. Despite being only six months old, Patek Philippe has already taken the opportunity to expand its controversial Cubitus collection with two new, smaller models. Unveiled at Watches & Wonders 2025, the new Cubtius watches are essentially the same as the introductory model launched last October, with the same dial, bracelet, movement, and even thickness, aside from the new diameter. Up close, they’re impressive despite the limited range (you can choose any colour you like, as long as it’s blue or gold); while they’re one of Patek Philippe’s least imaginative releases this year, they may represent what the Cubitus was supposed to be like in terms of size. Billed as “mid-sized” watches, the 40mm Patek Philippe Cubitus 7128/1G-001 and 7128/1R-001 watches promise to be more popular than their 45mm predecessors.

The defining feature of the Cubitus is its case geometry. The original model was square and angular, and was heavily criticized by many watch fans who were unhappy that Patek Philippe had “replaced” the Nautilus. The Nautilus is one of the most iconic watch designs of all time, with its carefully considered angles, conceived by master watchmaker Mozart Gerald Genta, and its iconic “ears” that are symmetrical without being rigid. While Patek Philippe has vehemently denied that the Cubitus replaced the Nautilus, it seems too coincidental that several key models were discontinued before the Cubitus was released. More tellingly, we didn’t see any new Nautilus models at Watches & Wonders, but did see two new Cubitus watches, albeit in smaller sizes. At 40mm, the new Cubitus cases may be more comfortable to wear, but they’re still uninspired, with too many flat surfaces around the crystal, and a contour that’s too blocky compared to the Nautilus’s pleasing “rounded” shape. But it’s not all bad. The integrated bracelet is well-made and comfortable, with a butterfly clasp emblazoned with the Patek Philippe logo, and the case is 8.5mm thick, which helps it sit close to the wrist. But once again, Patek Philippe is not interested in the steel sports watch genre, choosing instead to focus on precious metals. The new Cubitus watches are available in white or rose gold, which means that steel purists will need to continue to be wary if they want something other than a 45mm green-dial, three-hand watch.

On the positive side, the dials of the new Cubitus watches are refreshed, but Patek Philippe has stretched the definition of "refreshed" here. Functionally, they retain the pure chronograph functions introduced last year, but are now available in blue or brown, depending on the gold color you choose. Everything else remains the same, from the date window at 3 o'clock to the shape of the hands and hour markers, and the horizontal pattern, which once again strongly proves that the difference between the Cubitus and the Nautilus is not as great as Thierry Stern imagined. From the back, the in-house Caliber 26-330 SC is beautiful to look at, thanks to the elaborately decorated counterweight and the plated text engraving on the main bridge. Although the power reserve is a little underwhelming, at 45 hours, it’s unlikely to be a daily wearer for many people, so its endurance is irrelevant. Besides, if you can afford the price, you can buy a winder.

The most important thing about Patek Philippe’s new Cubitus watches is what they represent. First, they took the right step in case design. If you look closely at the blue-dialed version, you can even see a 40mm stainless steel Nautilus through it. Especially in these days of increasing uncertainty for both watch buyers and sellers (at least in the United States), Patek Philippe should give people what they want: a stainless steel sports watch. Second (and somewhat paradoxically), a Cubitus watch of any size is unlikely to be the ultimate goal for most buyers. Just as Rolex’s Land-Dweller may well have been a stepping stone for buyers pursuing “holy grail” watches like the stainless steel Submariner and Daytona, the Cubitus is a gateway to the rest of the Patek Philippe collection. Understood in that light, some of its derivatives suddenly become more palatable.
