Rugby 22 should come as a real treat

As a player and rugby fan myself, I was eager to get my teeth into this title. I’ve long bemoaned the fact that rugby hasn’t been as well represented on console and PC as perhaps its footballing and NFL counterparts. As a follow up to the somewhat averagely-received Rugby 20, Rugby 22 should come as a real treat for those eagerly awaiting an updated rugby gaming experience.

Rugby 22 is clearly a game that tries its best to recreate the action seen on the pitch each game. And, to be honest, there are areas of gameplay that are enjoyable. But they are unfortunately scattered in between a number of questionable on-field issues.

Right off the bat, you’ll realize that the learning curve of the game remains far too difficult for newer players. If you’ve played any of the prior games in the series, picking it up shouldn’t be too bad. If you’re new, however, good luck. Even with the tutorials available, it’s still not a game newcomers are going to get the hang of quickly.

Using footwork is a delight in Rugby 22 with sidesteps, spins, stutters, dummies and fends all activated by right stick flicks that work intuitively, in that they feel very similar to the same moves in FIFA or Madden, and are a huge improvement on years gone by (though why they can’t just explicitly list the exact controls for all of the moves I have no idea). Steps are unfairly effective, even from lumbering forwards, while palms feel particularly brutal as you throw a defender to the ground. Buying time to get a pass away with a fend is a great feeling, as is beating a fullback one-on-one with a step or a dummy. On higher difficulties these moves will be crucial to finding open space, and the AI is ruthlessly adept at exploiting these tools itself.

Something I was a little taken aback by is the distinct lack of English teams in-game. One of the main draws of playing sports sim titles like these is being able to call on recognised faces from the sport you love. Consequently, mixing placeholder AI players with the few famous faces that evidently have been licensed just feels a bit odd. This may be something that some gamers become frustrated by.

Visually, the game looks ok. Player models are solid enough and the animations are pretty good most of the time. There are some hiccups during long sprints and tackling, but nothing that turns you off from playing the game. Overall, it’s pretty smooth.

On the pitch, Rugby 22 is oh so close. With some crisper passing, better defensive AI and balanced scrums this would be a genuinely great rugby union game. I’ve had to manufacture tension to create fun in just about every rugby game of the last 15 years, in Rugby 22 I had caveat-free fun for a decent chunk of the time I was playing. Unfortunately, the closer these games get to quality, the more those little issues stand out, and off the pitch this is still an unsatisfactory package lacking modes, licences.

Rugby 22 is a big step in the right direction for the rugby sim genre. I can’t help but wonder though how much more enjoyable and engaging the game would be if it had managed to secure licenses for the English league and international teams and the South African international team. There’s still plenty for fans of the All Blacks, Wallabies, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and many other nations though!

Great review, thanks for sharing your detailed thoughts on Rugby 22. It's interesting to hear that the on-field gameplay is finally moving in the right direction, even with the licensing issues. The improved footwork and AI difficulty you mentioned sound like they add a real challenge, especially for newcomers.

Speaking of challenges and trying different games, sometimes I like to switch gears from sports sims to card games for a more relaxed experience. If you're into that sort of thing, you might find yono all games apk a fun way to explore different rummy and card game options on your device. It's a nice change of pace from the intensity of the rugby pitch.

Back to Rugby 22, it's a shame about the missing English teams, that would definitely break the immersion for fans of those clubs. Hopefully, they can secure more licenses for the next iteration.

Fair take, I’m with you on the licensing side, that stuff matters more than some people admit because once the realism slips, it’s harder to stay invested. And yeah, I get switching from sports sims to something more relaxed now and then. When I do that, I usually care less about the genre and more about whether the platform itself feels worth my time. That’s a big reason I ended up liking the official 1Win https://1win-pak.pk/ in Pakistan. What worked for me was that it felt easy straight away, no messy layout, no hunting around for basic sections, and no feeling that the whole thing was stitched together in a rush. I also liked that it didn’t overwhelm me with clutter, so if I just wanted a quick session, it stayed quick, and if I wanted to browse more, it was still comfortable. Add in smoother navigation, decent overall stability, and the fact that even my wife didn’t complain when she tried it, and yeah, it just ended up being one of those platforms I actually kept using instead of deleting after a few days.
