Weighing up whether to buy a high mileage car or pay more for a newer one

I'm in a bit of a dilemma and would love some real world opinions. My budget for a used car in Sharjah is limited, which means I'm looking at two main options, a newer car with lower mileage that's a bit outside my price range, or an older, higher mileage car that I could afford more easily. I've been reading up on the pros and cons of older driven vehicles to help me decide. On one hand, I see that a well maintained high mileage car can be reliable and cost effective, especially if it has good service history. On the other hand, I'm aware that parts like the suspension, cooling system, and transmission might need more attention sooner, especially with our heat and traffic. For those of you who have taken the high mileage route, was it worth it in the long run? What hidden costs should I really be prepared for?
