I just got a call from what looks like a law firm called Dennis P. Block & Associates, and my stomach dropped. I’m a renter in California, and I’m a few weeks behind on rent due to a medical issue. I haven’t received any official eviction notice yet, but I know this firm represents landlords in eviction cases.
Has anyone else dealt with them calling out of the blue? Is this a sign that my landlord is about to file an unlawful detainer lawsuit? I am terrified of getting a default judgment and having an eviction on my record. I don’t want to ignore it, but I also don’t know what my first step should be.
From what I am reading online, you have to respond very quickly to avoid an automatic eviction judgment. Does anyone have experience fighting back or negotiating with this specific firm? I really need to know if I should answer the next call or immediately go talk to a tenant rights attorney. Any advice on how to protect myself right now would be a lifesaver. Thanks.
