When offering condolences in a formal Japanese environment, I’ve found that the choice of words regarding death in Japanese is a delicate balancing act of respect and distance.

I am specifically looking for advice on the phrase "goshuukoku," or similar high-level honorifics. At what point does a phrase become too formal for a close friend, yet necessary for a business superior?

Furthermore, are there specific "taboo" words that must be strictly avoided during a wake to prevent bad luck or "kegare" (impurity)? Any guidance on navigating these subtle social minefields would be deeply appreciated.
